Meal Requirements For School Lunch
Have you ever wondered what the meal requirements are for school lunch? The federal government requires schools to offer the following items at lunchtime:
8 ounces of fluid milk
3/4 cup of Fruit/Vegetable (total from 2 different sources)
2 oz. of Meat /Meat Alternate
1 oz. Grains /Bread
Students may decline (refuse) up to 2 of the above items and it will still count as a qualified meal. Sometimes people think every child must take their milk. This is not true. They can choose to refuse the milk as long as they have 3 of the above items on their tray.
Some foods count as more than 1 item. For example, pizza would count as the bread, meat and one of the vegetables (pizza sauce).
