Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts (MESA)

"Unlocking Learning through the Arts"

Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts (MESA) is a 7th-12th grade college preparatory high school focused on arts and art integration.

MESA is a member of the Expeditionary Learning Network, a comprehensive school reform and school development model that emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth and teamwork. The arts serve as part of the academic core, along with the sciences, humanities and mathematics.

Learning at MESA is organized around compelling, inquiry-based learning expeditions, a specific topic of focus for the trimester. Expeditions provide structure to deliver rigorous core content and instructions in English, social studies, science and art classes. Each of these classes has learning targets based on State standards that students must meet. Service learning and character development are also built in to MESA's curriculum. MESA's school culture fosters both academic risk-taking and reflection.

Students have English, social studies, math, science and art classes every day. Freshmen and sophomores participate in Adventure Fitness. Juniors and seniors participate in Spanish classes. Students have the same core teachers for two years, 7th-8th grade, 9-10th grade, and 11th-12th grade, allowing teachers to get to know their students well and form positive relationships.

MESA has celebrated a 100% college acceptance rate multiple years in a row, with students receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds. Students are proud to take ownership of their school and community.

MESA students are...

  • Students who plan to go to college.
  • Students who will take academic and creative risks - such as reading poetry in front of 150 of their peers.
  • Students willing to participate in weekly, student-led grade level meetings.
  • Students willing to be a successful leader as well as a productive group member.
